Song notes:
It’s my great honor and pleasure to know Dale Bruning. In the mid 1970’s, I would go listen to him play guitar with saxophonist Spike Robinson’s quartet at their weekly Sunday night gig at the Walrus in Boulder. Then often enough, on the following Monday or Tuesday, I’d drive to Dale’s home in Denver for a lesson with the master. Those morning lessons were wonderful, generous, and always seemed hand tailored to whatever it was I needed at the time. Besides learning harmony and improving my rhythm, I took what he taught me of left and right hand technique and applied it to my studies on mandolin and fiddle. I’m still trying to learn some of the things he showed me.
A lot of the better musicians on Colorado’s front range studied with Dale. The wonderful Bill Frisell was amongst them. At the behest of Nick Forster, Bill, Dale and I got together in April of 2015 to not only catch up, but to record with each other. (Write to eTown and tell him to put that stuff out!) This is an outtake from the sessions, of Dale’s arrangement for the seasonal folk song Greensleeves. On this track, Dale plays a lovely acoustic arch-top made in Colorado by the late, great Dennis Stevens. At 82 years of age, Dale continues to write, arrange, perform, and teach.
