Covenant

Covenant d.o.c. 9/6/23 Tom Paxton, Jan Fabricius, Tim O’Brien

A sunny day in Nashville, spring was in the air
Drove our son to Covenant school, wondered how he’d fare
He grabbed his pack and said goodbye, we watched him walk away
He took our two hearts with him, he did that every day

A covenant’s God’s promise
Unbreakable and strong
A vow of deep protection
As true as life is long

Someone came up and shot him, shot five others too
Later we stood there asking what can decent people do
We have his small blue backpack, his lunch was still inside
We unpacked his sandwich and cried and cried and cried

A covenant’s God’s promise
Unbreakable and strong
A vow of deep protection
As true as life is long

The community stands with us, I’m sure you’ve seen the signs
I’m all for lighting candles but what about changing minds
To arm ourselves seems senseless, a quiet soul despairs
We need these guns to go away, what we get are thoughts and prayers

A covenant’s God’s promise
Unbreakable and strong
A vow of deep protection
As true as life is long

A sunny day in Nashville, spring was in the air
Drove our son to Covenant school, wondered how he’d fare
He grabbed his pack and said goodbye, we watched him walk away
He took our two hearts with him, he did that every day
